In the West at least, more and more people today seem to prefer early retirement rather than keep working till the time one reaches the retirement age. And this figure seems to be increasing. The Internet has worked as the catalyst providing a myriad of home business opportunities, which many are taking up to work from the comforts of home. And why not, when you can make as much if not more, then why go through this daily drudgery of going to office and facing a temperamental boss.

But there are problems with early retirement as well. The #1 problem is that of a stable income. While in a job you are sure of your pay package at the end of the month and thus can plan your expenses accordingly, many who retire early and work from home go up-and-down. That is the revenue may be high one month and down the other. So they are never quite certain what to expect. So if you are also planning to quit early and go on your own, do keep this in mind. Also you need at least some savings to help you tide over the troubled times. There is a Retirement Calculator that will help you plan for retirement by calculating the amount you will need to save. It also compares the amount you can expect to have based on your personal savings plan.

Problem #2 of early retirement. The good old days of family values and support systems are almost gone, probably for good. Now everyone is almost on his own. But in this too, there are communities - and the office community is in a strange way sometimes very bonding. If someone has friendly colleagues, a good work environment and important responsibilities, then most will actually look forward to going to office. Now when the person takes early retirement, all this is naturally gone. It is very unlikely that the same colleagues will actually have the time or the inclination to check out on an old mate. So the person is on his own and sometimes may feel quite frustrated and bored with it all.

But that's one of the problems with modern society.
