As people grow in age, they become more and more lonely. The children go their own way and are separated. Friends and relatives are either dead or have moved. The situation becomes more acute when either of the spouses is no more alive.
With retirement comes another set of evils. Gone are the days of endless spending, fun and gaiety, of partying and frolicking. And the not too distant death stares stubbornly in the face. The large living room and the empty halls seemingly mock with their vacant look. What a senior needs above everything else is companionship, someone to talk to and someone who will take care of all the needs, including the medical emergencies. Retirement homes are such places.
The homogeneous ambience of the home automatically lifts the spirits and a leisurely walk along a waterfront with newly acquired friends could indeed be pleasant and joyful. There are many retirement homes today that are actually lavish affairs, with lakes, gold courses, beautifully decorated and maintained gardens and even clubs. But such homes come at a price. Of course there are the one's that are not that hard on the pocket, but in these places the luxuries are also limited. However all retirement homes do provide the basics.
Retirement homes are also now promoting an active lifestyle. Gone are the days when seniors where just supposed to relax, bask in the sun and read the newspaper. Today's homes have gymnasiums and health clubs where seniors are promoted to go for a work out to stay fit. There are dieticians and medical professionals who take care of their health round the clock.
Retirement homes also promote the development or fulfillment of a long time hobby of the senior. If you have always wanted to play the guitar but never actually had the time to learn it, the home is a good place to start off, as you will have the time you need at last. And the officials are more than willing to help you pick it up.
